ARGYROS

Yiannis Argyros winery (Santorini, Greece) is a family winery that was established in 1903.
It specialized in bulk wine sales. Yiannis (Granson of the founder) took over in 1974 and improved the technology and farming. Following his first bottling (1987), the early nineties brought great improvement in his wines.

In 1989, looking for the next step, Yiannis met Argyros. 5 years later they started a collaboration in which Yiannis was the oenologist for Argyros who provided fruit and facilities.

The wine was Yiannis' Gaia Wines. Gaia Wines is preparing to build a winery on Santorini but even still plans to use Argyros grapes.

His vines are an important factor in the wine, and although they vary from 50-300 years old, some of them need to be revitalized. Vines will be grown in trained rows, replacing the traiditonal hillside crown-trained vines that were designed originally to protect the grapes from the wind. The new winery will provide a conversion to stainless steel, refined barrel selection and a revision of vineyard management practices.

The wines, in keeping with Santoriniote tradition, are mainly appellation whites, consisting of Asyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani Aspro and traces of lesser local varieties. Argyros has made inroads with the problematic Aegean red Mandilaria, which is in release but still a work in progress.
